Tackling the Cost of Inventory Counts

Posted by Jeff Pollock

May 6, 2019 3:19:22 PM

We have heard (separately) from two precast manufacturers that it costs $25,000 to conduct an inventory count. If there is one process that immediately justifies automated data collection, this is it.  While the cost naturally depends on the size of the yard... they both have yards of about 40 acres... automating inventory counts for yards of any size will produce obvious savings. RFID tracking is the solution to this and, with a few kinks to work out, there are a few ways that this will happen.

Why Tunnel Projects Require Digital Records

Posted by Jeff Pollock

Seattle just completed its SR 99 tunnel, a project that replaced the aging Alaskan Way Viaduct with a tunnel that runs under the city and offers substantially more protection to motorists against the effects of an earthquake. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) bills the tunnel as "one of the smartest tunnels ever built".  It's no surprise, therefore, that WSDOT required that product data for the segments manufactured for each ring of the tunnel be captured and transmitted to the DOT in digital form.

Reduce Waste to Grow Profits

Late last year the National Precast Concrete Association released its 2018 Precast Industry Benchmarking Report, a report based on a survey of membership that describes the state of the industry and offers performance metrics for precast concrete manufacturers. This is a valuable resource for the industry and one we purchase every year. The 2018 report includes interesting data that we found very consistent with reports we have heard in our own discussions with precast producers. One glaring statistic jumps out as an immediate opportunity to grow profits.

RFID Tracking Direct to Your ERP System

Customers tell us that the biggest headache in managing precast operations is in dealing with inventory. They subscribe to our RFID product tracking service because they want a more efficient way to do this. Though their enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems automate management of most other business functions, they do not offer the complete inventory tracking solutions that precasters need. How nice would it be to automate this as well?

Smart Infrastructure with IoT

The 'smart city' is the wave of the future and there is a lot of interest in making it happen. However, you don't seem to hear as much about 'smart infrastructure', which is curious. Every house has a foundation, and infrastructure is the foundation of the city, so it stands to reason that you can't have a truly 'smart' city unless it is 'smart' all the way down to its foundation. Idencia is all about smart infrastructure so we thought we would share our vision.

Customer Ideas for RFID Concrete Tracking

Posted by Jeff Pollock

Nov 18, 2017 10:04:19 AM

Over the past two and a half years about 80 precast and prestressed concrete manufacturers have subscribed to the Idencia concrete tracking system to improve inventory control and implement paperless QC processes. As they have integrated Idencia into their operations, they have developed some great ideas for improvements based on their user experiences. We welcome this input because our customers often come up with suggestions that may never have occurred to us. Every once in a while we like to report the new features that have been developed from these ideas.

Why Concrete Tracking Is BIG In Texas

Posted by Jeff Pollock

Aug 3, 2017 3:51:17 PM

Texas is rapidly becoming one of the most active states in using RFID tracking for managing production and inventory control of precast concrete. Why?

For one reason, precast and prestressed concrete producers selling to TX DOT are required to produce production and quality assurance records known as PC-2 and PC-7 reports (for prestressed and precast producers, respectively). These are very detailed reports that concrete tracking systems prepare automatically, saving a lot of administrative time.

RFID Tracking for Lean Precast

Posted by Jeff Pollock

Apr 1, 2017 1:28:47 PM

At its essence, a lean manufacturing practice is the continual pursuit of more efficient ways to operate. Ideas are contributed by all involved in any process; they are tested for effectiveness; and the winners become standardized in the workflow. These standardized practices are reduced to their simplest elements and visual cues are placed throughout the plant to optmize integration and efficiency. RFID tracking is a natural tool for supporting the implementation of lean manufacturing practices at precast concrete plants. Here's why.

Construction Contractors Want RFID Tracking

Posted by Jeff Pollock

Feb 4, 2017 11:41:14 AM

The precast concrete industry has embraced RFID tracking for its benefits of paperless QC, real-time inventory reporting and productivity management. Now construction contractors are starting to demand product tracking for their own benefit. With web hosting, the producer, contractor and project owner can easily create and share a timeline history of every product in each project. Our conversations with contractors reveal a few common themes about the productivity they see from the practice.

Found Money for Precast

Posted by Jeff Pollock

Jan 20, 2017 1:20:16 PM

We heard a story recently from a large precast manufacturer that expects to produce a windfall of multiple millions of dollars by initiating a change that is available to any concrete producer. This 'found money' has nothing to do with growing sales. No change in price; no change in collections processes. In fact, it has nothing to do with changing anything external to the company. It will be produced by making a very simple internal change.
